Notarizing Artwork

Notarization can play an important role in protecting art and literary works from forgery and fraud as well as potentially increase the value of the piece(s).Fraud Protection:
A notary public’s stamp or seal verifies that the item was signed in the presence of a sworn notary public and adds protection against forgery of that item.
Increases Value:
A notary’s signature and stamp can increase the value of and authenticates the document or artwork.
Legal Requirements:
Notarization may be required for certain documents or submissions.
Prevent Litigation:
Notarization can help prevent disputes of contracts and litigation.
How is artwork notarized?
A Certificate of Authenticity (COA) is created by the Artist or Author or their legal representative, it should include:
~ Artist name
~ Title of work
~ Photo of Work or Manuscript
~ Date Of Completion
~ Medium
~ Dimensions
~ Artwork description
~ Statement of authenticity
~ Artist Signature*
*The Artist or Author should sign the COA in the presence of a Notary Public or other Official and the stamp or seal of the Notary should be applied to the COA.Notary vs Copyright:
Copyrighting, trademarking and notarizing are all different ways of protecting your creations. Notarization is not required to copyright or trademark your creation but it can be the first step in those processes and is often done as a measure to protect a brand new creation before applying for an official trademark or copyright with the government.
